Maj. Gen. Robert Whittle serves as the Deputy Commanding General for United States Army North (Fifth Army) headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He is responsible for plans, exercises, and operations for the Land Component Command of United States Northern Command. U.S. Army North is the Theater Army and Army Service Component Command to U.S. Northern Command, the geographic combatant command for North America. U.S. Army North’s mission is Homeland Defense, Defense Support of Civil Authorities and Theater Security Cooperation. He most recently served as the commanding general of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, responsible for delivering engineering and water resource solutions for the Great Lakes and Ohio River region, which covers 335,000-square miles and encompasses portions of seventeen states. Maj. Gen. Whittle also previously served as the 97th commandant of the U.S Army Engineer School in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and as the Deputy Commanding General for the 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood, Texas. Other previous assignments include Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in the 40th Engineer Battalion, Baumholder, Germany. Company Commander in the 2nd Engineer Battalion, Camp Castle, Korea. Whittle, a native of Mystic, Connecticut, holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Military Arts and Science from the School of Advanced Military Studies, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the Marine War College. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia.
