Michael Capps
Co-founder and CEO | Howso
Dr. Michael Capps is CEO and co-founder of Howso (formerly Diveplane). He previously spent a decade as president of Epic Games, growing it from 20 employees into a global gaming powerhouse. In 2017, Capps came out of retirement to tackle one of the largest problems we face today: the ethical problems of black-box AI making decisions that affect people’s lives. The founders of Howso’s top goal is to replace black-box AI with transparent, ethical methods–even above profit –and Howso’s investors share this social impact goal. Capps is a thought leader in the development of responsible data and AI practices. In 2020, he co-founded the Data & Trust Alliance, a CEO-level non-profit focused on sharing best practices for safe data and AI. Alliance members include the CEOs of Walmart, IBM, American Express, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and two dozen similar companies. In addition to running Diveplane, Capps led the Competitiveness Council for the Business Executives for National Security, and regularly advises US lawmakers on issues of national resilience and humanity’s existential need for responsible AI. He holds BS and MS degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, and a PhD in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School.
