Laura Burns

Head of Political Risk, North America, WTW

Laura leads the political risk insurance broking practice in North America for WTW. Based in Washington, DC, she specializes in providing political risk management expertise to Fortune 1000 corporations and non-profit organizations, with investment exposure in emerging markets. With 23 years of experience as an underwriter and broker, Laura oversees the structuring and management of placements in both the private insurance markets as well as the public markets such as the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC).  In addition to managing the team, her principal role is to provide counsel to multinational corporations on their political risk exposures to facilitate clients’ growth, capital mobility, and protection of their balance sheets. She has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Fortune, Forbes, Politico, Foreign Policy, Business Insurance, Risk and Insurance, S&P Global, Property Casualty 360 and other publications.

Laura joined WTW in 2014.  Prior to joining, she was Vice President of political risk within another national broker’s political risk practice.  Laura began her career in insurance with Chubb, as an underwriter trainee.  She then took on various roles as underwriter, senior underwriter, territory manager, and then moved to the broking side of the business.   Prior to joining the insurance industry, Laura served as an intern with the U.S. Department of State. 

Laura obtained her B.A. in Policy Studies (Economics, Political Science and Philosophy) from Dickinson College and a M.A. in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. She is a member of DACOR, an organization of foreign affairs professionals.
