Ilya Strebulaev

Ilya Strebulaev is an international expert in venture capital (VC), private equity, financing innovation, and strategic financial decisions. He is the David S. Lobel Professor of Private Equity and Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. Strebulaev is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the founder and faculty director of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Venture Capital Initiative. Strebulaev’s work has been widely published in leading academic journals. He has won or co-won numerous prestigious academic awards, including first prize of the 2007 Brattle Group Prize in Corporate Finance (for papers published in The Journal of Finance) and first place for the 2011 Fama-DFA Prize (for papers published in the Journal of Financial Economics). His research has been featured by many major media sources, including the Harvard Business Review (on the VC mindset and VC decision-making), the MIT Sloan Management Review, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Bloomberg, Reuters, Barron’s, Fast Company, Fortune, VentureBeat, and TechCrunch. He was named a LinkedIn Top Voice in 2023. His book The Venture Mindset : How to Make Smarter Bets and Achieve Extraordinary Growth, coauthored with Alex Dang, will be released internationally in May 2024. Strebulaev developed a VC class at Stanford that he has taught to over 1,000 students. He has taught students in the master of business administration, master in management, doctoral, and executive education programs at Stanford. His quality of teaching has earned him the Stanford MBA Distinguished Teaching Award, the Stanford Sloan Teaching Excellence Award, and the London Business School’s inaugural Masters in Management Best Teacher Award. Strebulaev has led many workshops and executive sessions internationally on innovation trends, VC, the ecosystem of Silicon Valley, corporate innovation, corporate VC, and strategic decision-making for senior business and government leaders and for partners of VC and private equity firms. He has also consulted global companies and investors on the valuation of VC-backed companies, selection of VC investments and managers, and portfolio allocation. Strebulaev graduated from the London Business School with a doctorate in finance and also holds degrees from Lomonosov Moscow State University (bachelor of science in economics) and the New Economic School in Moscow (master of arts in economics).
