Dr. Makeeba McCreary

President of the New Commonwealth Racial Equity and Social Justice Fund (NCF)

Dr. Makeeba McCreary, President of the New Commonwealth Racial Equity and Social Justice Fund (NCF), and Quincy Miller, President of Eastern Bank, NCF Founding Board Member, and NACD-NE Chapter Board Member, will lead a discussion on their board governance model and what’s next for the future. Dr. Makeeba McCreary serves as President of the New Commonwealth Racial Equity and Social Justice Fund (NCF). The New Commonwealth Fund was founded in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. When faced with these twin crises, nineteen of Massachusetts’ leading Black and Brown executives launched NCF to disrupt and reform the philanthropic power structures that have disenfranchised Black, Latino, and Indigenous leaders for generations. 95 percent of NCF’s grantees are led by people of color and 100 percent of NCF’s investments support Black and Brown communities. In just three short years, NCF has raised nearly $40 million and reinvested $11 million into more than 150 Black and Brown-led non-profits across the Commonwealth. Makeeba joined NCF after two and a half years with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). In her role she focused on audience development and integrating diverse perspectives through the lens of art. Prior to joining the MFA, Makeeba served as the Managing Director and Senior Advisor of External Affairs for Boston Public Schools, reporting directly to the Mayor and Superintendent of Schools and held several positions in philanthropic focused non-profits and corporations before working for the City of Boston. A native Bostonian, Makeeba received her doctorate in education from the Teachers College at Columbia University, a master’s degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
