Betsey Nelson

Betsey Nelson is an experienced public company CFO and board member with a passion for helping entrepreneurs scale their operations and build great companies. She has broad experience across the tech industry, including software/software-as-a-service, internet platforms, marketplaces, payments, life sciences, hardware manufacturing, and telecom. Betsey brings a strong international and operational perspective gained from hands-on experience with high-growth startups, global enterprises, turnarounds, and restructuring. She has helped many companies through the initial public offering (IPO) process and has experience chairing boards as well as audit, compensation, and governance committees. Betsey currently serves on the board of public company Upwork, as well as on the boards of several private companies. Prior public board experience includes Ancestry, Autodesk, CNET, Nokia, Pandora Media, SuccessFactors, and Zendesk. As a director Betsey has helped many companies through the IPO process, built boards that engage and motivate corporate management, served as board chair and lead independent director. Since 2006 Betsey has focused on board work and venture investing. Prior to that she served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Macromedia, a leading web development software company, through its acquisition by Adobe, a period of high growth and transformation to over $500 million in revenues, 2,500 global employees, and a tenfold increase in market value to $4 billion. She was directly responsible for building the company’s key operational and financial functions, including business and corporate development, customer care, finance, investor relations, information technology, legal, and operations. Betsey began her career in technology at HP, where she held a variety of positions in international field finance and in corporate development. Before that she worked with Nathan Associates in Washington, DC, where she was involved in projects in Asia, Africa, and Latin America for the World Bank and the US Agency for International Development. In addition to her work in technology, Betsey is active in international development and nonprofit organizations. She currently chairs the board of directors of DAI, a leading employee-owned international development firm based in Washington, DC, and is an advisor to Fifty Years and Mercy Corps Ventures, two early stage venture funds backing high-impact entrepreneurs globally.
