Ashwin Rangan
Director
Ashwin “Ash” Rangan is an experienced independent director with an exceptional track record. His expertise is at the intersection of geopolitics and technology, specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), global digital strategies, e-commerce, cybersecurity, and quantum computing.
Most recently, while chief innovation and information officer with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Rangan was responsible for integrating business processes with advanced technologies. He led a global team with a unique remit to secure, stabilize, and make resilient the core of the internet globally. During his 10-year tenure with ICANN, the internet userbase more than doubled, from under 2.5 billion to over 5.3 billion users; the name space expanded from 300 labels to over 1,500 labels; and ICANN's funding almost tripled.
Rangan has served on the boards of PiVX, a pioneer in cybersecurity (acquired by the private equity firm Lotus Fund in 2005); Integrien (acquired by VMWare in 2010); and MarketShare (acquired by Neustar TransUnion in 2015). Following nine years of uninterrupted service, Rangan recently termed-out as the non-executive chair of the American Red Cross board and as board member of Smart Energy Water, both based in Orange County, California.
In 2020, Rangan became a director with GrandPad, a revolutionary offering that enables super-agers (people in their 70s, 80s, and beyond who have physical and cognitive abilities similar to their younger counterparts) to interact with their loved ones within a technology-enabled "walled garden" while still enjoying all the benefits of the internet. He serves as the CEO's trusted advisor on all technology strategies. He was also recently elected director with NACD's Pacific Southwest board.
In his board service, Rangan draws on his extensive and varied C-suite experience, spanning almost 30 years in the Fortune 30 space. He was accountable for the spin-off of the Rockwell Semiconductors Systems division from Rockwell International, leading to the initial public offering (IPO) of Conexant Systems Inc. in 1999, the industry's first-ever $1 billion+ IPO. Subsequently, he successfully led Conexant through the post-mergers-and-acquisitions integration of 30 acquisitions. Rangan led the early-stage growth of e-commerce at Walmart.com, scaling a nascent business unit to over $1 billion in profitable revenue. He then joined Bank of America to help launch the bank's app on the iPhone in 2006 and 2007, leading to the bank's fastest customer acquisition at the smallest acquisition cost ever. Rangan pioneered at-scale data analytics using cloud computing at MarketShare, with an industry-defining set of products addressing chief marketing officers' budgets for resource allocation in a rapidly digitizing world. MarketShare became a premium acquisition for Neustar TransUnion. Just prior to ICANN, he served as global chief information officer with Edwards Lifesciences, where his team orchestrated technology-enabled processes to launch the SAPIEN transcatheter heart valves, leading to an increase in Edwards Lifesciences market cap from $4 billion to over $50 billion.
Rangan is committed to excellence in the boardroom, with a bias for formal and continuing knowledge acquisition. In 2002, he completed the Director Training and Certification program at the UCLA Anderson School of Management (2002) in Los Angeles, California. In 2018, Rangan earned a diploma in cyberpolicy, cyber/electronic operations, and warfare from the Harvard Kennedy School in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned NACD's CERT Certificate in Cyber-Risk Oversight in 2021 and MIT Professional Education's Certificate in Applied Generative AI for Digital Transformation in 2023.
Rangan earned a master's degree in management from the Indian Institute of Management in Mumbai, India, and has been recognized as a distinguished alumnus. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering design from the Bangalore University in Bengaluru (Bangalore), India.
Rangan has authored two books on information technology governance at the “top of the house,” both available from Amazon. He is in the process of coauthoring a third book, focused on board-level governance of AI.
He is a long-standing member of Mensa International.
