Cybersecurity has been a regular topic of boardroom discussion for some time.  But increasingly, new issues related to data and rapidly-advancing technologies are making their way onto board and audit committee agendas, including:

• The importance of the company’s entire data lifecycle (how data is collected, used, sold, shared, stored and deleted) to its risk and opportunity profile

• The fact that data privacy and surveillance issues are now part of the national-security conversation, with implications for trade and business agreements with China and other countries

• How advances in machine learning, including artificial intelligence, are opening up dramatic new opportunities for customer engagement, as well as potential benefits inside the firm via enterprise applications – But are also raising significant concerns about risks related to fairness, bias, accuracy, privacy, and legal liability
