Long before corporate directors asked executives to develop risk dashboards, gamblers were concerned about their odds. In some ways, the anklebones of sheep and goats are tied to the origin of risk forecasting. Astragalus is the Greek word for one of those anklebones, and the name of an early game of chance that uses the rectangular bones like dice. There is some evidence that folks were playing this game with astragali as far back as ancient Egypt. Some paintings depicting a match have been dated to tombs from 3500 BC...
